For Parents

FAQs

Check out these frequently asked questions to learn more about what to expect in student ministry.

  • How do I learn about what is happening in Walnut Creek Students?

There is some degree of regular communication from our Student Ministry Director. If you’d desire to be added to a communication list, please contact Cody.

  • As a parent, how am I to think of my involvement in Walnut Creek Students?

God has given kids to their parents to disciple and train in the Lord, not to the student ministry. Therefore, it is not that parents support Walnut Creek Students, but that Walnut Creek Students is supporting the work of parents. It is our hope that any gospel learned, Bible read, or friendship made is supplementary to what parents are teaching their kids and connections that parents are making available to their kids. As you all spend time with other families in the church and your students grow in friendship with other students in the church, Walnut Creek Students benefits as a secondary outcome. Given the relatively short amount of time spent at youth group on Wednesday nights, Walnut Creek Students can build upon what is happening within your family, but probably won’t be the place where an entirely new and deep friendship is born for your student.

  • What is a student’s small/discussion group like?

Middle school students are grouped by gender and grade (6th grade boys, 7th grade girls, etc.) into discussion groups. This boils out to each group being between 4-10 students, led by 2-3 members of the church. These members commit to serving for one year, with the intent of serving for many years as their group ages into high school. The discussion groups are intended for kids to discuss the sermon from the night and get to know one another better.

High School students are grouped by gender, but mixed grades (9th and 11th grade boys are likely in small group together). There are roughly 8-12 high school students in any given small group, led by 2-3 small group leaders. High school small groups happen before the sermon on Wednesday nights, so students can learn how to study the Bible together, examining the passage before hearing the sermon.

  • Do you offer accommodations for students with special needs?

We would like to meet the needs of each and every child who considers our ministry. We have the capability to offer a range of services, but handle each need in a student-by-student manner. If you have a student requiring some sort of special support, please contact Cody to brainstorm how we might be able to meet the unique needs of your student.
